Taft Point Yosemite Elopement — Andrea & Patrick

A Taft Point Elopement, Witnessed by Exactly One Person

Andrea and Patrick got married at Taft Point on October 23rd, and there was no one else there. No friends, no family, no other vendor standing off to the side. Just the two of them, and me.

We hiked out before sunrise to catch blue hour — that narrow window when the sky has gone from black to a deep, cool blue but the sun hasn't broken the horizon yet. It's a quiet kind of light, the valley still half-asleep, the trail empty except for our headlamps. By the time we reached the point, the world had that stillness blue hour has and nothing else does.

The Ceremony

I've photographed a lot of elopements, but there's something different about being the only witness to one. No guests to direct, no one else's reaction to capture — just Andrea and Patrick, standing at the edge of Taft Point with the valley opening up below them, saying vows to each other with no one watching except the person whose job was to remember it for them.

That's not a small thing to be trusted with. Being asked to stand in as the only witness to two people joining their lives together is an honor I don't take lightly, and it's part of why elopements like this one are exactly the work I want to be doing.

Cathedral Beach

After the ceremony, we hiked back out and headed to Cathedral Beach for more photos and their cake cutting. The mood shifted entirely — from the quiet, weighted stillness of the ceremony to something looser and lighter. Patrick's true colors came out here, goofy and unfiltered, the kind of energy that only shows up once the vows are said and a couple can just be themselves again. Andrea matched it right back. Cake cutting at the edge of the river, golden light by then, both of them clearly relieved and happy and a little silly with it.

What Their Day Looked Like

  • Pre-dawn: Hiked out to Taft Point to catch blue hour

  • Ceremony: Taft Point, just the two of them and one witness

  • After: Hiked back out to Cathedral Beach

  • Closing: Photos and cake cutting at Cathedral Beach in full daylight

Some elopements are about the view. This one was about how much can happen in complete privacy — no audience, no performance, just two people and the one person trusted to remember it.

Thinking about a Taft Point elopement of your own?

I've hiked this trail before sunrise more times than I can count, in every kind of light Yosemite has to offer. I'll handle the permit, the timing, and the plan — so whether it's just the two of you or a few more, the only thing you have to think about is each other.
