I won't line you up and ask you to smile. I give you small, easy cues — where to walk, something to say to each other — then step back while it turns into the two of you. Before photography I was a competitive ballroom dancer, so I know how it feels to be watched, and how to make it stop feeling that way.

I'm the only adventure elopement photographer in the Lake Tahoe area who shoots hybrid — Photo and video as a complete record of your day, with 35mm film available as an add-on — and handles every logistic as part of the process. Not because it's a selling point. Because the two things are inseparable. You can't be fully present in your day if you're worried about what comes next.

I shoot your day on digital and video — not as two separate things, but as one complete record. Photo catches the quiet glances, the fast ones. Video holds the sounds, the pauses, the vows as they actually sounded. 35mm film is available as an add-on: it slows things down, makes every frame deliberate, and folds into that same complete record for couples who choose it.

If you'd rather not deal with permit paperwork, I can file it for you as a $350 add-on. Either way, nothing on the day pulls you out of it. I know the Lake Tahoe mountains the way you only can after years of working here. The light at Emerald Bay at 6am. Which trails close in October. Which permit offices take three weeks to respond. In Yosemite, I know which ceremony sites stay quiet in spring, and which ones only empty out in fall.That kind of knowledge isn't something you can research from a distance — and it changes everything about what a mountain elopement day looks like.

A few things couples ask me first.

Yes, but the permit required depends on your exact location. Emerald Bay State Park and D.L. Bliss require a California State Parks permit. Sand Harbor falls under Nevada State Parks and has its own permit process. Many locations around the lake fall under USFS land managed by the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, which has separate requirements. Eagle Rock typically does not require a permit for small groups. I'll tell you which permit your location needs. You can file it yourself, or I can handle the process from start to finish as a $350 add-on.

The Lake Tahoe elopement locations I return to most often are Emerald Bay (iconic glacially-carved cove with crystal-green water), Sand Harbor (granite boulders and turquoise shallow water on the Nevada side), Eagle Falls (cascading waterfall with Emerald Bay in the distance), Eagle Rock (panoramic 360-degree views, no permit required for small groups), Inspiration Point (elevated aerial view of Emerald Bay), Cave Rock (dramatic basalt formation on the Nevada shore), and Vikingsholm Beach (sheltered cove at water level inside Emerald Bay).

Each season offers something distinct. Summer (June–August) brings vivid blue-green water and long golden evenings — arrive at sunrise to beat crowds at popular locations. Fall (September–October) is the most popular season — aspen trees turn gold, crowds disappear after Labor Day, and the light is warm and directional all day. Winter (December–March) offers snow-covered landscapes and near-complete solitude. Spring (April–May) brings snowmelt waterfalls and wildflowers before summer crowds arrive.

Elopement experiences at AJ Photography start at $2,800 for the Half-Day Experience — 4 hours of photography with a timeline built around the light and the crowds. The Full-Day Experience is $3,600 for 6 hours and adds a highlight film. The Sunrise to Sunset Experience is $4,900 for 8 hours and adds full ceremony video and a print set. The Epic Adventure Experience is $7,000 for 10 hours, with an extended film and an album credit. Permit handling is a $350 add-on, 35mm film is a $300 add-on, and Film-Forward is a $1,200 upgrade. No travel fees within the Lake Tahoe region.

California State Parks issues permits for ceremonies at Emerald Bay — you can file the application yourself, or I can file it for you as a $350 add-on. Sunrise timing is essential at Emerald Bay, both for the light and to have the location to yourselves before the parking lot fills.

Lake Tahoe straddles the California-Nevada state border. The California side includes Emerald Bay, Inspiration Point, and Vikingsholm, managed primarily by California State Parks. The Nevada side includes Sand Harbor and Cave Rock, managed by Nevada State Parks, and Eagle Rock, which falls under USFS land. Your marriage license should be obtained from the county where your ceremony takes place — I will help you identify the correct county and office based on your chosen location.

Yes — dogs are welcome at many Lake Tahoe elopement locations including Eagle Rock, the East Shore coves, and various USFS trailheads. State park locations, including Emerald Bay (California) and Sand Harbor (Nevada), have leash requirements and restrict dogs on certain trails. I will help you find a location that works for your whole family, four-legged members included.

For summer and fall dates — the most popular seasons — 6 to 9 months in advance is ideal. July, August, September, and October fill 6 to 12 months out. Permit availability at locations like Emerald Bay and Sand Harbor can also be a constraint during peak season. Winter and spring dates typically have more flexibility at 3 to 6 months out.

Yes — several Lake Tahoe elopement locations require minimal walking. Vikingsholm Beach involves a short flat path from the trailhead. The East Shore coves are easily accessible. Zephyr Cove offers a flat beach walk. Various lakefront locations in South Lake Tahoe are also accessible regardless of mobility needs. I will find the right spot regardless of preference for accessibility.
