WHY LAKE TAHOE

Alpine beauty that photographs itself

Lake Tahoe sits at 6,200 feet above sea level, straddling California and Nevada, and on a clear day the water is so blue it barely looks real. It's one of the most naturally stunning places in the American West — and one of the best places in the country to elope.

01

02

Four completely different seasons

Wildflower meadows in summer, amber aspens in fall, snow-draped pines in winter, crystal-clear water in spring. Whatever time of year you're planning, Tahoe has something extraordinary to offer.

Incredible variety in a compact area

In a single day you can move from forested overlooks to granite shorelines to open water views — without driving hours between spots. That flexibility lets us build a gallery that feels genuinely rich.

Adventure without total wilderness

Great places to stay, eat, and celebrate nearby — while still feeling a world away from everyday life. The perfect balance for couples who want something epic but not logistics-heavy.

WHY WORK WITH AJ PHOTOGRAPHY

Your Tahoe photographer lives here.

Most photographers who shoot at Tahoe drive in for the day. I'm based 20 minutes from South Lake Tahoe. I know which permit office to call, which trailhead has parking at 6am in July, and where the light is at Emerald Bay in late September that most photographers have never found.

Based in Gardnerville, NV — 20 minutes from the lake

Know Emerald Bay, Sand Harbor, Inspiration Point, and Cave Rock in every season

Familiar with both California State Parks and Nevada State Parks permit processes

Know which trailheads fill first and when to arrive to beat the crowds

Have photographed Tahoe elopements in every season, including midwinter snow

Planning support included in every package — no separate planner needed

“I am SPEECHLESS by Armando and his second shooter Eli! The work they did brought us to tears and the impact they had on our day will not be forgotten. His work is the exact vision I had. Armando is very reliable. He answers emails quickly and arrived to our wedding early. He’s is very professional and adaptable.

BEST LOCATIONS

The spots worth knowing

Deep familiarity beats a big territory. These are the locations I've scouted in every season, at every hour of light — and I'll match you to the right one based on your vision.

Emerald Bay Lake Tahoe sunsrise - Lake Tahoe AJ Photography

Emerald Bay

Best light: Sunrise · late afternoon

The most iconic view at Tahoe — a glacially carved cove with water that shifts from deep blue to brilliant green. Stunning at any time of day, but sunrise here is something else entirely.

Couple at Sand Harbor sunset - Lake Tahoe elopement AJ Photography

Sand Harbor

Best light: Morning · before 9am

A Nevada State Park beach with large granite boulders, crystal-clear shallow water, and a pine forest backdrop. More relaxed and unhurried than the California side.

Couple at Eagle Lake sunset - Lake Tahoe engagement photographer AJ Photography

Inspiration Point

Best light: Golden hour · sunset

A lesser-known overlook above Emerald Bay — wider and more expansive than the standard pullout, and typically far less crowded. The full length of the bay in warm evening light.

Couple at Cave Rock Lake Tahoe morning sunrise - Lake Tahoe elopement AJ Photography

Cave Rock

Best light: Late afternoon

A volcanic formation on the Nevada shore rising directly from the lake. Quieter than the California side, dramatic, and offering unobstructed views north along the shoreline.

PLANNING & TIMELINE

Tahoe has more moving pieces than most elopement destinations — dual state jurisdiction, seasonal road closures, permit timing that varies by location. I've navigated all of it. Here's what every couple needs to know.

Everything handled before your day.

PERMITS

Do you need a permit to elope at Lake Tahoe?

It depends on your location. Emerald Bay and most of the California west shore fall under California State Parks — they require a ceremony permit, and fees vary by season. Sand Harbor is a Nevada State Park with its own permit process. Some USDA Forest Service land around the lake requires a Special Use Permit. I research and handle all of this as part of every package.

TIMING

Best time of year to elope at Lake Tahoe

June through October is the prime window. June brings the most vivid blue-green water of the year. September and October offer golden aspen color, crisp air, and far fewer crowds after Labor Day. Summer weekends at popular spots like Emerald Bay can be crowded — I schedule around early morning (before 8am) or golden hour to get you iconic shots without the masses. Even winter is extraordinary: snow on the mountains, ice at the edges of the lake, and near-empty trails.

Tahoe sits at 6,200 feet, so even July evenings can be cold — always build layers into your outfit plan. A 20–30 degree temperature swing from midday to golden hour is common.

BOOKING

How far in advance should you book?

Summer weekends (June–August) fill 4–6 months out. August fills fastest. Fall and winter dates are more flexible — 3 months is usually sufficient. If your date is tied to a permit window or sunset timing, reach out as soon as you have it locked.

WHAT TO WEAR

Outfit guidance for Lake Tahoe

Layers are essential. Mornings at 6,200 feet can be 20–30°F cooler than afternoon temperatures. Flowing dresses photograph beautifully against the blue water — bring a warm wrap you can remove for ceremony photos. Earth tones, creams, and deep greens work beautifully against lake and granite. If hiking to your location, wear shoes you can actually walk in — I can find spots where you can change at the ceremony site.

FAQ

Common questions

Can't find yours? I read every message myself — write to me directly and I'll give you a straight answer.

  • It depends on the specific location. Emerald Bay State Park requires a ceremony permit through California State Parks — fees and availability vary by season. Some USDA Forest Service land around the lake requires a Special Use Permit for groups. Sand Harbor (Nevada side) falls under Nevada State Parks and has its own permit requirements. I'll identify exactly what's needed for your chosen spot and walk you through the application process — permit logistics are included in every package.

  • Emerald Bay is the most iconic — the turquoise water against granite cliffs is otherworldly, especially at sunrise before day hikers arrive. Sand Harbor on the Nevada side offers massive boulders, crystal-clear water, and stunning mountain backdrops. Inspiration Point gives you a sweeping elevated view over the entire bay. Cave Rock is dramatic and moody. For something more intimate, there are hidden coves and forest clearings along the western shore that most people drive right past. I'll show you options that match your vibe — grand and dramatic, or quiet and secret.

  • June through October is the prime window. The lake is accessible, wildflowers are blooming through July, and the light in September and October is golden and warm. Summer weekends at popular spots like Emerald Bay can be crowded — I schedule shoots for early morning (before 8am) or golden hour (the last 90 minutes before sunset) to get you the iconic shots without the crowds. Lake Tahoe sits at around 6,200 feet, so even summer evenings can be cold — I always give couples a heads-up on what to pack.

  • Yes. I work with trusted videography partners for couples who want both photo and film coverage of their day. Videography is available as an add-on — reach out and I'll connect you with the right fit for your style and budget. Having both photo and video is especially popular for Tahoe elopements where the scenery does so much storytelling.

  • Layers are your friend at Tahoe. Mornings at 6,200 feet can be 20–30 degrees cooler than afternoon temps, and wind picks up near the water. Flowing dresses photograph beautifully against the blue water, but bring a warm layer you can remove for ceremony photos. If you're hiking to your location, consider shoes you can actually walk in — I can recommend spots where you can switch into dress shoes at the ceremony site if you want that look. Earth tones, creams, and deep greens all work beautifully against the lake and granite.

  • For summer and fall dates (June–October), I recommend booking 4–6 months in advance. August weekends fill fastest. If you have a specific date tied to permits, sunset timing, or travel plans, reach out as soon as you know it. Off-season dates (November–May, excluding holiday weekends) typically have more availability — and winter elopements at Tahoe, with snow on the mountains and ice at the edges of the lake, are stunning in their own right.
